Wigan Central station lå på Station Road, et stykke fra de to hovedstationer, som ligger i den vestlige del af bymidten.
Wigan Central var den endelige endestation for Wigan Junction Railways fra Glazebrook West Junction. Den blev bygget af Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway og åbnede den 3. oktober 1892, da den erstattede den midlertidige Wigan Darlington Street endestation, som havde åbnet den 1. april 1884. Central var cirka 1⁄3 mile nærmere bymidten end Darlington Street.
