Ti nordvest for Zwolle ligger området omkring IJsseldelta. Meget typisk for området er de landsbyer, der er bygget på højder, så man kunne bevare tørre fødder, når IJssel oversvømmede. Nogle gange er selv individuelle gårde bygget på separate højder, hvilket kaldes husbjerge. De ældste højder finder man på bredden af IJssel.
