Søen blev anlagt i midten af 1960'erne i skovløber Hardenberg, med en strand rundt om søen. I midten af søen ligger en lille ø. I 2008/2009 blev der anlagt en hård sti som en samarbejdsbane, men også beregnet til brugere af kørestole. Også i skovløberiet omkring søen er der mange cykel- og vandrestier. I området omkring rekreationssøen ligger et stort antal campingpladser, især omkring landsbyen Rheeze, hvilket også gør den til en turistattraktion. Derudover bruges søen til at stå på skøjter ved strenge frostforhold, og der har de seneste år været et nytårsdyk, når der ikke er is på.
