Ungdomsbyen blev grundlagt af Søstrene Dominikanerinder fra Bethanië og blev taget i brug i 1957. Den officielle åbning, i nærværelse af den daværende prinsesse Beatrix, fandt sted i 1960. Det drejede sig om omsorg for unge, der var anbragt udenfor hjemmet.
I 1959 blev klosteret færdigbygget. Søstrene kom fra Magdalenahof i Exaten nær Baexem, hvor der allerede eksisterede en plejeinstitution for børn af dømte NSB'ere og andre krigsforbrydere. Fra 1983 var ledelsen i hænderne på ikke-gejstlige, og i 1988 fusionerede man med Huize Clara Fey i Roermond.
