Fra Boerenschansen overvågede de statslige belejrer skibstrafikken over Bossche Sloot og beskyttede den sydligt beliggende Hollandsche Dijk. Skansen, genkendelig som en forhøjning i landskabet, var en af de største af de ni linieskansede. Den var omkring 575 meter lang og 340 meter bred. Boerenschansen ligger på Vlijmens område, i kommunen Heusden. Inden for militærlejrene i linjen skulle de protestantiske feltprædikanter have været aktive, såsom den tidligere præst fra Vlijmen og dengang Heusden præst Gisbertus Voetius. Vlijmen var dengang den nærmeste hollandske landsby, og Heusden den nærmeste hollandske by. Den logistisk vigtige fæstning Heusden blev set som “TLANTS STERCKTE”.
