Hier lag einst das alte Dorf Elsene, eine der 19 Brüsseler Gemeinden. Der Maalbeek, der etwas höher bei der Terkamerenabdij entspringt, bildete hier natürliche Teiche, in denen die Mönche Fische züchteten. Zwei dieser Teiche sind noch sichtbar, der dritte wurde zugeschüttet und in diesen Platz umgewandelt. Der Maalbeek selbst wurde ebenfalls unter die Erde verlegt. Das schöne Gebäude des Nationalen Instituts für Rundfunk, das von 1930 bis 1960 Sendungen ausstrahlte, ist ein klassifiziertes Art-Déco-Gebäude des Architekten Diongre und trägt den Spitznamen 'das Paketboot'.
