Das Schloss von Laken ist von einem 120 ha großen Park umgeben und wurde 1782 erbaut. Die Residenz hieß damals Schoonenberg. Unter Napoleon wurde Schoonenberg zu einem militärischen Hauptquartier und sogar zu einem Gefängnis. Das Schloss wurde mehrfach umgebaut und gelangte nach den Aufständen gegen Wilhelm I. in den Besitz des belgischen Staates, der es zur Residenz für Leopold I. machte. Alle unsere Könige, mit Ausnahme von Albert II., hatten dort ihren Wohnsitz. Der Königliche Palast von Brüssel, der 7 km entfernt liegt, dient als Arbeitsplatz.
