Mit dem Bau der Basilika wurde 1857 begonnen, anlässlich des Dogmas der Unbefleckten Empfängnis im Jahr 1854. Monsignore Malou, Bischof von Brügge, wollte eine monumentale Kirche für sein ganzes Bistum, um dieses Dogma zu ehren. Die Pläne stammen von dem englischen Architekten Edward Welby Pugin. Die Kirche von Dadizele wurde 1882 von Papst Leo XIII. zur Basilika erhoben. Neben der Heilig-Blut-Kapelle in Brügge ist es die einzige Basilika im Bistum.
Die wunderschönen Glasfenster erzählen neben der Geschichte der Kirche auch verschiedene Fakten aus dem Leben Mariens.
In der Krypta sehen wir das Grabmal, die Sporen, die Handschuhe und das Schwert von Ritter Johannes von Dadizele. Die Basilika ist ein geschütztes Denkmal.
