Der Ursprung des Dikkebusvijver reicht bis ins Jahr 1320 zurück, als auf Befehl von Robrecht von Bethune, Graf von Flandern, der (Kleine) Kemmelbeek an der Nordseite aufgestaut wurde. Die Ufer des Baches stromaufwärts des Damms wurden ebenfalls abgegraben und das Überschwemmungsgebiet vertieft. Über Gräfen und Eichenholzrohre wurde das Wasser dieses Teichs zu den Ieperner Festungen geleitet (Boterplas).
