Aalst ist am bekanntesten für seinen jährlichen Karneval und auch für seinen 'Schwarzen Mann', die Statue von Dirk Martens in der Mitte des Grote Markt. Dirk Martens druckte das erste Buch mit beweglichen Lettern in den Niederlanden. Ein ebenso berühmter Nachfahre ist der Romanautor Louis Paul Boon. Aalst machte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts auch ein Stück belgische Politikgeschichte mit der zentralen Figur des Priesters Adolf Daens, über den Louis Paul Boon übrigens sein berühmtestes Buch 'Pieter Daens oder wie im 19. Jahrhundert die Arbeiter von Aalst gegen Armut und Ungerechtigkeit kämpften' (1971) schrieb. Aalst verdankte früher seinen Wohlstand unter anderem dem Hopfenanbau. Die Kathedrale von Amiens war das Vorbild für die Aalster Sint-Maartenskerk, die jedoch nicht fertiggestellt wurde. (Quelle: Wikipedia)
