Gents wirtschaftliches Schicksal änderte sich im 18. Jahrhundert infolge der kriminellen Handlungen von Lieven Bauwens. Er schmuggelte die britischen Spinnmaschinen während der Napoleonischen Blockade in die Stadt. Indirekt war er also verantwortlich für die Armut und Ausbeutung der Arbeiterklasse von Gent. Wusstest du, dass er so unpopulär war, dass er die meiste Zeit in Frankreich verbringen musste? Jetzt hat er eine Statue in Gent.
