Das Braunbier hat Oudenaarde zu einer berühmten Bierstadt gemacht. Auf der anderen Seite der Schelde siehst du die Gebäude der berühmten Brauerei Liefmans. Dort wurde 1770 das erste 'braune' Bier gezapft. Heute wird immer noch nach einem 300 Jahre alten Rezept gebraut. Das Kriekbier begann hier erst viel später zu schäumen. Die Brauanlage, mit Kochkesseln, Kühlschiffen und Baudelot-Kühlern, ist immer noch aus rotem Kupfer gefertigt.
Heute gehört Liefmans zur Groep Duvel Moortgat.
