Der Friedhof von Reningelst und die 'Erweiterung' wurden von März 1915 bis zur Inbetriebnahme des 'Neuen Militärfriedhofs' im November 1915 genutzt. Die Hälfte der Gefallenen, die in der 'Erweiterung' beigesetzt wurden, kam bei Hill 60 in Zillebeke ums Leben, nach dem Versuch der deutschen Truppen, am 1. Mai 1915 mit Chlorgas den künstlich angelegten Hügel zurückzuerobern. Die 5. Division der britischen Armee hielt stand, aber mehr als 300 Soldaten mussten wegen einer Gasvergiftung in eine der 'Feldambulancen' hinter der Front gebracht werden.
