Adolphe Sax wurde 1814 in Dinant geboren. Als Sohn eines Instrumentenbauers begann er in jungen Jahren mit einer Musikausbildung in Brüssel. Sein Lieblingsinstrument war die Klarinette, aber Sax begann bald zu experimentieren und versuchte, neue Instrumente zu entwickeln. 1835 stellte er eine komplexe Bassklarinette vor, und 1841 brachte er auf der Brüsseler Industrieausstellung ein Saxophon heraus. In Belgien erhielt er jedoch nicht die nötige Anerkennung und gründete in Paris eine Instrumentenfabrik, die zu einem Unternehmen mit mehr als 200 Mitarbeitern heranwuchs.
