Im südwestlichen Teil von Zonhoven finden wir entlang der Bahnlinie Hasselt-Mol das Naturschutzgebiet de Platwijers. Das Gebiet ist etwa 100 ha groß.
Die Platwijers bestehen hauptsächlich aus angelegten Fischteichen und Wiesen. Die Zuführung von Wasser, das mit zahlreichen Nährstoffen angereichert ist, hat der reichen Flora nicht gut getan. Wir bekommen schließlich eine zunehmende Verbuschung der Vegetation.
Dieses Reservat ist jedoch vor allem für seinen reichen Vogelbestand bekannt. Zahlreiche Arten finden hier einen geeigneten Rast- und Brutplatz. Die meisten Innenwege sind daher für die Öffentlichkeit gesperrt, da die Vögel sonst zu sehr gestört werden würden.
