Die Kapelle ist der Jungfrau Maria geweiht. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurden ihr unzählige Erscheinungen und Wunder (wie die von Lourdes oder Fatima) zugeschrieben, was ihre Verehrung auf der ganzen Welt festigte. Dies führte zum Bau Tausender Marienkapellen , auch auf dem flämischen Land.
Es ist klar, dass diese Kapelle zusammen mit der Scheune gebaut wurde . Möglicherweise war es Teil einer Prozession oder wurde errichtet, um den Wohlstand der Familie zu zeigen.
