Halberstadt ist Kreisstadt des Landkreises Harz in Sachsen-Anhalt . Die Stadt liegt im nördlichen Harzvorland. Die Innenstadt wurde am 8. April 1945 durch einen Luftangriff zu mehr als 80 % zerstört. Danach wurde sie über Jahrzehnte wieder oder neu aufgebaut.
Halberstadt liegt rund 20 Kilometer nördlich des Harzes an der Holtemme und dem Goldbach. Nördlich der Stadt befindet sich der Höhenzug Huy, im Osten die Magdeburger Börde und im Süden die Spiegelsberge, Thekenberge sowie die Klusberge. Halberstadt ist mit rund 43.000 Einwohnern die größte Stadt des Landkreises Harz.
