Esens ist eine Kleinstadt im ostfriesischen Landkreis Wittmund sowie Mitgliedsgemeinde und Verwaltungssitz der Samtgemeinde Esens.
Historisch gehört die Stadt – als wichtigster zentraler Ort – zum Harlingerland, das endgültig erst im Jahr 1600 durch den Berumer Vergleich zur Grafschaft Ostfriesland kam. Seit 1885 ist Esens Teil des Landkreises Wittmund, der aus den Ämtern Wittmund und Esens sowie der Stadt Esens gebildet wurde.
