Die Kernstadt von Petershagen, also Petershagen ohne die umliegenden, zugehörigen Ortschaften, liegt bis auf wenige Häuser des "Brückenkopfes" unmittelbar westlich der Weser, an der Mündung der Ösper. Gegenüber, auf dem östlichen Ufer liegt Petershagen-Lahde.
Bis zum 31. Dezember 1972 war Petershagen eine Stadt im Amt Petershagen und Sitz der Amtsverwaltung. Am 1. Januar 1973 wurde sie mit etlichen Gemeinden zur neuen, deutlich größeren Stadt Petershagen zusammengeschlossen.
