In den frühen 90er Jahren war der Görlitzer Park ein frei zugängliches Brachland. Diese Vakanz führte dazu, dass das Gelände im Sommer 1989 von der Mutoid Waste Company, einer anarchistischen Kunstkommune aus London, besetzt wurde. Der Standort wurde teilweise wegen seiner Nähe zur Mauer gewählt. Bei einer denkwürdigen Gelegenheit schufen die Schrottkünstler einen "Friedensvogel", eine Konstruktion mit einem hoch in der Luft hängenden Vogel, der in der Lage war, entlang der Gleise zum Grenzpunkt auf der Brücke zu rollen und in einer Geste des Friedens gegenüber der DDR den Vogel den Menschen im Osten zu präsentieren.
