Das Generalarchiv von Indien in Sevilla (Spanien) wurde 1785 auf Ersuchen von König Karl III. mit dem Ziel gegründet, die Dokumentation im Zusammenhang mit der Verwaltung der spanischen Überseegebiete , die bis dahin in verschiedenen Archiven verstreut war , an einem Ort zu zentralisieren.
Das Archiv beherbergt rund 43.000 Akten mit etwa 80 Millionen Seiten sowie 8.000 Karten und Zeichnungen. Es wurde 1987 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt.
Ursprünglich war dieses stattliche Gebäude ab 1584 die Handelsmesse des Handelskonsulats (Consulado de Mercaderes) für den Handel mit Gold, Silber, Gewürzen und Kakao zwischen Spanien und der „Neuen Welt“. Seine Architektur im Renaissance-Stil zeugt von Sevillas herausragender Rolle als Handelszentrum während des Goldenen Zeitalters Spaniens.
