Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ließ der französische Minister Maginot ein Verteidigungswerk aus Kasematten (insgesamt 58 Forts) im Norden und Nordosten errichten. Eine sinnlose Übung, da Flugzeuge und Fallschirmjäger nicht berücksichtigt wurden. In Marckolsheim steht das Musée Mémorial André Maginot, nicht weit vom Rhein, selbstverständlich.
