Pommard ist eine der legendären Appellationen der Côte d'Or (Côte de Beaune). Die Appellation liegt zwischen den Weinregionen von Beaune (im Norden) und Volnay (im Süden). Daher hatte sie immer einen etwas geschmeichelten Ruf, der manchmal auch negativ wirken konnte. In der Appellation Pommard AOC oder Pommard Premier Cru AOC werden ausschließlich Rotweine hergestellt. 28 Climats sind als Premier Cru klassifiziert.
Im Norden tragen die bekanntesten Premiers Crus Namen wie Grands Epenots, Petits Epenots und etwas höher gelegen am Hang, Les Pezerolles. Im Süden finden wir den bemerkenswerten Premier Cru Les Rugiens mit ihrem Reichtum, ihrer Intensität und ihrer unerreichten Kraft. Man kann sich übrigens fragen, warum die Appellation noch keinen Grand Cru hat. Viele dieser bemerkenswerten Weine verfügen laut zahlreicher Insider über genug Vorzüge für eine solche Anerkennung.
