Die Ägäis ist größtenteils Teil eines Back-Arc-Beckens (siehe Grafik). Ein Back-Arc-Becken ist ein geologischer Beckentyp, der an konvergenten Plattengrenzen auftritt. Derzeit sind alle Back-Arc-Becken unterseeische Strukturen, die mit Inselbögen und Subduktionszonen verbunden sind. Die postmiozäne Geschichte der Ägäis ist durch eine Back-Arc -Ausdehnung gekennzeichnet, die bereits im Eozän begann.
