Am meisten besucht im Palazzo della Cancelleria ist der Arco della Cancelleria.
Der Bogen der Kanzlei ist das Tor, das sich an der Nordseite der ersten Mauer von San Gimignano öffnete und aus dem 10.-11. Jahrhundert stammt. Damals existierte die Nachbarschaft hinter dem Tor noch nicht und von hier aus führte die Straße ins offene Land nach Pisa und war Teil der Via Francigena. Heute ist dieser Straßenabschnitt Teil des Viertels San Matteo, das um 1200 entlang der Straßenachse entstand, die den Handel und die Handelsmöglichkeiten förderte.
