Kaiser Karl trat im Alter von 56 Jahren von seinem Thron zurück. Drei Tage nachdem er 1556 auf seinen Thron verzichtet hatte, verließ er Flandern in Richtung Yuste, in der spanischen Estramadura. Dort hatte er neben dem Monasterio de San Jeronimo einen kleinen Palast errichten lassen, um den Rest seiner Tage dort zu verbringen. Für diese letzte Reise ging er in Vlissingen an Bord. Nach dreizehn Tagen erreichte er die asturische Küste.
