Im 15. Jahrhundert wurde bereits über "Blocksyl" gesprochen. 1581 wurde das Städtchen befestigt. Um 1600 erhielt Blokzijl allerlei Privilegien, wie die Ernennung eines eigenen Bürgermeisters. Blokzijl war lange Zeit unter spanischer Herrschaft und in dieser Zeit ging es Blokzijl gut. Das Städtchen lag an der Zuiderzee und war ein wichtiger Handelsplatz. Blokzijl erhielt 1672 das Stadtrecht.
Heutzutage ist es ein touristisches Städtchen.
