Die Vervierfachung der Bevölkerung im 17. Jahrhundert ging auch mit einem Mangel an hygienischen Einrichtungen einher, der zu vielen Krankheiten wie Cholera, Pest und Tuberkulose führte. So starben 3 von 4 Kindern von Rembrandt bereits nach wenigen Monaten. Ihre Gräber befinden sich auf dem Platz hinter der Zuiderkerk. Auch seine Frau Saskia starb in sehr jungem Alter (29). Ihr Grab befindet sich in der Oude Kerk, an der ersten Nische links von der Orgel. Auch seine spätere Lebensgefährtin Hendrickje, sein Sohn Titus und seine Schwiegertochter Magdalena starben früh. Sie liegen zusammen mit Rembrandt selbst in der Westerkerk begraben.
