Das Witte Venn war nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg eine bekannte Schmugglerregion. Kaffee, Schnaps aber auch lebende Tiere wurden an den Zöllnern vorbei über die deutsch-niederländische Grenze gebracht. Dabei überboten sich Schmuggler und Grenzbeamte gegenseitig an Einfallsreichtum, so dass das gesetzeswidrige Verhalten nicht selten den Charakter eines Katz- und Mausspiels bekam. Heute ist das romantische Witte Venn im Münsterland ein Wander- und Naturparadies.
