Das Keelven ist ein Naturschutzgebiet mit Kiefernwäldern, Vennen und Heideflächen. In dem Gebiet sind verschiedene Wanderwege markiert, die von 4 bis 9 km reichen. Diese sind von dem Parkplatz in der Nähe des Keelven an der Provincialeweg in Someren-Heeze erreichbar. Auch Radwege führen durch das Gebiet (Teil des Radwegenetzes). Zudem verlaufen ausgewiesene Mountainbikerouten durch das Gebiet. Seit 2017 gibt es auch eine Gastronomiestätte am Parkplatz des Keelvens: De Soete Inval Vennenhorst. Im Gebiet leben auch Schottische Hochlandrinder, die verhindern, dass die Heide zuwächst.
