Die Schicht ist ein Denkmal auf der Insel Texel, das an die Erhöhung der Deiche auf Deltahöhe erinnert.
Die Sturmflutkatastrophe von 1953, bei der ein großer Teil der Provinz Zeeland überflutet wurde, hatte auch Auswirkungen auf die Insel Texel. Der Polder De Eendracht wurde überflutet und sechs Männer aus Texel kamen ums Leben. Nach dieser Sturmflutkatastrophe wurden alle Deiche auf der Insel auf Deltahöhe erhöht, um eine weitere Sturmflutkatastrophe zu verhindern. Dies geschah zwischen 1961 und 1981.
