Bourtange war ein Sandrücken in einem riesigen Moorgebiet, dem Bourtanger Moor. Über den Sandrücken verlief der einzige befahrbare Weg zwischen der Stadt Groningen und Deutschland. Kein Wunder, dass Diederik Sonoy und Willem Lodewijk dort eine Festung errichteten. Die Festung Bourtange wurde zuletzt 1742 verstärkt und blühte durch Landwirtschaft, Handel, militärische Aktivitäten und Schmuggel auf. Besonders die jüdische Gemeinde sorgte für einen lebhaften Mittelstand. Im Krieg wurde ein großer Teil der Gemeinde deportiert.
