Bithynien war zunächst eine antike Landschaft, später ein Königreich, dann römische Provinz im nordwestlichen Kleinasien. In Bithynien war der thrakische Stamm der Thynen angesiedelt.
Bithynien wird gegen Westen und Norden vom Marmarameer und dem Pontus Euxinus, gegen Süden vom Olympos bei etwa 40° n. Br. begrenzt. Gegen Osten trennt es der Parthenios von Paphlagonien; im Süden sind die anstoßenden Landschaften Galatien, Phrygien und Mysien.
