Um den Handel am wichtigen Hudson River zu kontrollieren, errichtete die Westindien-Kompanie oder WIC hier das Handelszentrum Neu-Amsterdam. Doch die Kolonie war durch Indianer bedroht und wurde von den Briten angegriffen. Die WIC baute hier eine Mauer, um sich zu verteidigen. Diese Mauer ist Namensgeber einer der bekanntesten Straßen der Welt: Wall Street. Die Mauer ist auf der Karte von Jacques Cortelyou, dem Generalgouverneur von Neu-Amsterdam zu dieser Zeit, verzeichnet.
