Houthem is a village in the west of the Belgian province of Hainaut and a part of the municipality of Comines-Warneton. It is a rural village, about three kilometers north of the center of Comines. The earliest mention of Houthem dates back to the year 1105. During World War I, Houthem was devastated. When the language border was established in 1963, Houthem was classified as Francophone with language facilities for the Dutch-speaking minority; as a result, the then-independent municipality from the province of West Flanders was transferred to Hainaut. In 1977, the municipality of Houthem merged into the municipality of Comines-Warneton.
