Berkenlatten was laid out in 1607 by the von Arnim family as a farm in the area of the Feldmark of the village of Bischofshagen, which had become deserted around 1450. At the same time, the nearby village of Böckenberg was built. In the Thirty Years' War, Berkenlaten was destroyed.
North of the village is the Wüste Kirche Berkenlatten, a church ruin dating back to the former village of Bischofshagen. Berkenlatten is known for the Berkenlatten ostrich farm, which has been located here since 2002.
