Description by the author

The slate past of Fumay makes it all the richer. Indeed, more than 300 quarries were exploited for nearly eight centuries. Let yourself be guided in the footsteps of the slate workers.

1/ Cross the N 51, in front of the Crédit Agricole, walk along this sidewalk until the mural of the Scailleteux (work of M. Favaudon). Take the covered alley on the right and go up to the last houses of the Haye district.
2/ Enter the woods via the path and reach the remains of the old Saint-Anne 2 slate quarry (informative panels). Continue and reach the Saint-Gilbert quarry. Cross the small plateau.
3/ Leave the return route to the right and reach the water treatment station. Follow the small road for a few meters.
4/ Take the path on the right and continue along the chemin des Eaux (which used to supply the city with drinking water). After 700 m, cross a stream and then, further on, a second one. Immediately after this one, turn left for 300 m. Cross the stream again.
5/ Engage on the first path to the left. At the intersection, go straight to the red barrier and continue through the shaded woods. Arrive at La Baccara (remains of an old slate quarry). After the barrier, head left for a few meters and reach a pile of slate waste. Continue.
4/ Join the water treatment station on the right and continue on the outbound route to Saint-Gilbert.
3/ Take the path on the left and climb into the forest via the Crêtes path. Follow the Point-de-Vue-de-la-Vallée path. At the television relay, continue along this path. At the fork, go left and descend to return to the starting point.
