Traditionally, limestone has been quarried in South Limburg and used as fertilizer and as building material for houses, churches and fortifications. The extraction of loose limestone for industrial use (raw material for cement production and fertilizer preparation) takes place in open quarries. In open-pit mining, the approximately 15-metre overburden is first excavated and then the limestone package is excavated from top to bottom.
Quarry 't Rooth is a marl quarry, where marl is extracted in open pits. The quarry has been partially redesigned, and has grown into a unique nature reserve, where various rare plant and animal species have developed.
