The Beneluxtunnel is a 1300 meter long river connection under the Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam and Schiedam for motor vehicles, cyclists, and the Rotterdam metro. It consists of multiple tunnel tubes that connect Vlaardingen and Schiedam with Hoogvliet. In the 1960s, there was a great need for more river connections than the Maastunnel and various ferry services, which led to the ring road around Rotterdam. Since 1964, the eastern crossing of the Maas has been served by the Van Brienenoord Bridge and since 1967, the western crossing has been served by the first Beneluxtunnel.
