The Turfvaart is a watercourse of approximately 24 km in length that runs through the natural areas of Pannenhoef and Vloeiweide along Effen to Breda, where it flows into the Aa or Weerijs.
The Turfvaart was dug in the 17th century. The first section of the Turfvaart was completed in 1619.
The canal was an important artery from which the area was peat-extracted. The canal facilitated the drainage of the peat swamp, and the peat was transported to Breda. On the return trip, the peat boats carried back manure to fertilize the extracted area.
Peat extraction began to decline by the end of the 17th century, as the best extraction sites had already been depleted. The last peat shipment was transported to Breda in 1733.
