This bike ride shows how water-rich and varied the hinterland of Terneuzen is. Just look at the breathtaking Westerschelde. Gazing over the water, you can easily daydream of distant journeys and exotic destinations. Of course, you bike along the dikes, allowing you to see the large container ships slowly sailing to and from
Antwerp.

From the Westerschelde, you dive into the inland. Along the way, you pass the creek and nature reserve De Vogel. As early as 1273, the Vogelkreek was dammed by the monks of the Abbey of Boudelo, a Cistercian abbey near Sint-Niklaas in Belgium. This created the Vogelpolder. You bike past various villages, including Hengstdijk, one of the oldest villages in East Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. You also pass several small hamlets such as Vijfhoek and Kijkuit.
Water is never far away here.

Through Axel and the Axelsche Kreek, the route leads you via the hamlet of Spui along the Otheense Kreek, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful routes in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Once, the creek was part of the Schelde estuary. The entire creek is bordered by a reed belt. This is a breeding area for many birds. The kingfisher can also be found here. In this idyllic environment, a park area has developed. A perfect place to rest before starting the last part of the bike ride.
