Entre octubre de 1914 y julio de 1917, Mesen estaba en el frente. Las consecuencias se pueden imaginar. De la ciudad no quedó mucho. En el centro de la ciudad había una abadía que albergaba el prestigioso Internado Institut Royale de Mesen. Las monjas huyeron a Francia al inicio de la guerra.
Todo el dominio estaba en ruinas y, después de la guerra, el instituto compraría un castillo en Lede, cerca de Aalst, para continuar allí sus actividades.
Las fotos que puedes ver aquí provienen de un álbum de fotos de un oficial alemán anónimo que se conserva en el Museo In Flanders Field en Ieper. Además de fotos del frente y instantáneas familiares, también contiene varias fotos 'turísticas'. Ya durante la guerra, el turismo de desastre había comenzado por ambos lados.
En abril de 1918, los alemanes recuperaron Mesen de las tropas sudafricanas.
La iglesia actual fue completamente reconstruida después de la guerra. El instituto en sí no.
