El área de los Moeren coincide con un "polder". Este es el término para un lago natural o una charca artificial que ha sido deshidratada mediante bombeo. Las primeras polder se encuentran en Noord-Holland y datan de poco antes de 1550. Esta data de un poco más tarde. Fue el anturiano Wenceslas Cobergher quien entre 1622 y 1626 logró drenar el lago de agua dulce aquí. Sin embargo, este lugar era un sitio estratégico, y la parte deshidratada se inundó más de una vez más tarde. Solo en 1815 el área fue finalmente convertida en tierras agrícolas.
