Aalst es más conocido por su carnaval anual y también por su 'Hombre Negro', la estatua de Dirk Martens en el centro de la Gran Plaza. Dirk Martens imprimió el primer libro con letras sueltas en los Países Bajos. Un descendiente igualmente famoso es el novelista Louis Paul Boon. Aalst también hizo un pedazo de la historia política belga a principios del siglo XX con el sacerdote Adolf Daens como figura central, sobre quien Louis Paul Boon escribió su libro más famoso 'Pieter Daens o cómo en el siglo XIX los trabajadores de Aalst lucharon contra la pobreza y la injusticia' (1971). Aalst debía anteriormente su prosperidad, entre otras cosas, al cultivo de lúpulo. La catedral de Amiens fue el ejemplo para la iglesia de San Martín de Aalst que sin embargo no se terminó.
