Opdorp era una libre señoría. Esto convirtió a Opdorp en una especie de área de inmunidad. Los señores de Opdorp y su población tenían una gran autonomía en el ámbito administrativo y judicial. Aparentemente, esto también significaba que Opdorp era un paraíso para contrabandistas y refugiados.
Los señores de Opdorp, por supuesto, tenían un castillo. El castillo se mencionó por primera vez en el siglo XVI como un burgo amurallado. Después de varias renovaciones, el antiguo castillo fue finalmente demolido por completo en 1887 para dar lugar a un nuevo castillo. En 1948 pasó a manos de los padres del Sagrado Corazón, quienes establecieron allí un hogar para jóvenes.
Desde 1984, el museo de historia local Ter Palen también encontró refugio allí. A través de objetos de uso, fotografías, herramientas y maquetas, quieren ilustrar la vida cotidiana de nuestros abuelos.
