Freddy Maertens nació en Lombardsijde en 1952 y fue uno de los mejores ciclistas belgas en las décadas de 1970 y 1980. Así, ganó entre otros tres veces el maillot verde en el Tour de Francia (1976, 1978 y 1981), fue el ganador final de la Vuelta (1977) y fue dos veces campeón del mundo en ruta (1976 y 1981). En 1976 también fue campeón de Bélgica.
En 2004, el ciclista fue nombrado ciudadano de honor de Middelkerke. En esta ocasión se reveló también un busto suyo, que fue diseñado por la artista de Ostende Josyane Vanhoutte.
Una parte del recorrido de entrenamiento que preparó al ciclista para sus numerosas victorias, también puede andar en bicicleta hoy, es una ruta de 42 kilómetros, la ruta Freddy Maertens.
