La cerveza marrón ha hecho de Oudenaarde una famosa ciudad cervecera. Al otro lado del Escalda, puedes ver los edificios de la famosa cervecería Liefmans. Allí se sirvió la primera “marrón” en 1770. Hoy en día, todavía se elabora según una receta de 300 años de antigüedad. La cerveza de cereza comenzó a espumar aquí mucho más tarde. La instalación de elaboración, con calderas de cocción, barcos de refrigeración y enfriadores Baudelot, todavía está hecha de cobre rojo.
Hoy en día, Liefmans forma parte del Grupo Duvel Moortgat.
