El transbordador de Appels-Berlare ya se menciona en documentos de 1255. En mapas antiguos aparece la mención 'Appelsveer', pero los habitantes de la otra orilla hablan del 'transbordador de Berlare'. Al igual que en otros transbordadores, en el pasado se transportaban animales, carretillas y carros. El entorno del transbordador sirvió como decorado en la película de culto flamenca 'Mira', basada en la novela de Stijn Streuvels 'La decadencia de Waterhoek'. En la misma película también aparece el puente Mirabrug sobre el Durme en Hamme.
