Durante la Segunda Revolución Industrial, las industrias en las ciudades de Roubaix y Tourcoing se desarrollaron muy rápidamente: tintorerías, fábricas de tejidos y lavanderías de lana…
La zona industrializada Roubaix-Tourcoing-Lille tenía una gran demanda de carbón y las minas de carbón de Henao eran un proveedor importante. También había necesidad de una carretera de conexión para el transporte de mercancías.
El ‘Canal de l’Espierre’ se construyó en 1840, como conexión acuática desde el Escalda hasta el Canal de Roubaix (en Roubaix) y hasta el Deûle (en Lille). El canal se construyó a lo largo del recorrido del fuertemente meandrante Spierebeek. Tenía 8,4 km de largo, 16 metros de ancho y 2 metros de profundidad.
El canal cayó en desuso tras el cierre de la última fábrica en 1983 y desde entonces no fue navegable.
El canal volvió a ser navegable para la navegación de recreo desde 2011.
