Con 'Prins de Ligne' se refiere a Karel van Arenberg (1515-1616). Karel, hijo de Jean de Ligne y Margaretha vander Marck, heredó el nombre 'Arenberg' de su madre, quien en su contrato matrimonial stipuló que sus hijos podían llevar el nombre extinto de Arenberg y el escudo de sus antepasados.
Originalmente, esta conexión entre Naamsesteenweg y Waversebaan no era más que un camino de campo. Fue pavimentado y en 1905 se le llamó Prins de Lignestraat durante las celebraciones del 75 aniversario de la independencia belga.
